Eager to make good on those resolutions to get fit? Take it slowly.

This morning Abbey was at the gym, which was predictably filled with folks eager to get started on their New Year's resolution to get back in shape. As she approached, she was greeted with flashing lights and EMTs. A fellow that none of the regulars recognized- in other words, a new customer- had collapsed while working out. We don't know many details beyond that, other than Abbey's observation that on the way out of the building, he was surrounded by EMTs and one of them was beating on his chest. I don't think you'd do that unless the patient's heart is not doing anything.

So, let that be a cautionary tale for all of us. If you are new to the world of exercise, don't expect to crank out your new body like churning milk into butter or mining Bitcoin. Start gently. Work your way up to your goal activity level. Listen to your body. If you feel aches and pains, ease off a few days and give yourself time to heal. Feeling winded is normal- but if you feel short of breath, stop what you're doing and see a doctor. Feeling short of breath accompanied by shooting pain in the left arm and sometimes the back is an indicator you might have flashing lights in your own future. If you feel discomfort when working out, it's usually worth checking it out.

Be safe and have a healthy 2014!
